Cold Solder

A novel by Peter S. Dubois

An electronics manufacturer accepts an order that reaches far beyond his factory. As business becomes intelligence work, the need to protect his company becomes harder to separate from the need to matter.

Jim Heller runs a struggling electronics factory in Eisenach. When a Japanese order looks wrong to him, he reports it. German intelligence asks him to fill it anyway, with a way in built into the equipment.

The job takes him to Japan and into a Russian procurement network. He says yes partly to save the company. The other part is harder for him to admit: he likes being needed by important people.

Jim tells it himself. He is exact about solder paste, production releases and purchase orders, and less exact about what he keeps from his wife and his staff. The espionage happens on factory floors, in offices and in bad weather.

Forthcoming.
